Should you consider buying an Imported Excavator?

Hey there! Welcome to the 多宝电子 blog. Whether you鈥檙e new here or a returning reader, we鈥檙e glad to have you! Today, we're doing something a bit different from our usual content. We'll be giving you an insight into out experience with Imported Excavators as well as an honest look into the greatest pros and cons of considering an Imported excavator for your next project.

The Project

It all started on our family鈥檚 farm. One day, we had a project that required a lot of digging. While the thought of digging with just hand tools was amusing, we soon realized it wasn't practical. So, we decided to get an excavator.

At the time, like many, we were average folks with little knowledge about excavator equipment and the machinery industry as a whole. Our project specifications suggested we needed at least a two-ton machine. Naturally, we leaned towards a well established brand - one we won鈥檛 name here due to legal concerns. With the confidence of a fresh college graduate, we visited the dealership. Everything looked perfect...

Until we saw the price...

Sticker Shock and the Search for Alternatives

To give you some perspective, for the quoted price of the excavator we could have bought this 2021 Jaguar:

Like any reasonable people on a budget, we looked for alternatives. Through our research, we discovered that many big brands manufacture their machines overseas. This led us to explore imported excavators, which cost much less.

The Catch

But what was the catch? Were these machines made of subpar materials? Did they break down frequently? After extensive research, we found that the real issue wasn鈥檛 frequent breakdowns but the after-sales service. Imported excavators often require parts that are hard to source because they come from overseas manufacturers.

If you buy an imported excavator at an auction and something goes wrong, here鈥檚 what you need to do:

  1. Determine the faulty part.
  2. Identify and contact the manufacturer.
  3. Spend a couple of weeks communicating back and forth across time zones to confirm the warranty and order the part.

Even if you get past these initial hurdles, the time to ship the needed part could take anywhere from 2-4 months, causing significant delays, especially for contractors on tight schedules.

Getting Burned

We realized that when you pay a premium for a brand-name machine, you鈥檙e paying for peace of mind. Established contractors often avoid imported excavators to avoid project delays. But we weren鈥檛 contractors working on massive projects; we were just a few guys needing to dig some holes.

So, we decided to take a chance. After three months reaching out to factories and getting quotes, we narrowed it down to a couple of options. We made our final decision based on a small detail in the technical specs of the offered machines. One of the two manufacturers promised 5cm more maximum digging depth.

We placed our order and put down a deposit. The time to manufacture the machine took a couple of weeks and we waited with anticipation. When the manufacturer let us know that our machine was ready to ship he sent us a video. Right away we could see that the delivered machine didn鈥檛 match our specifications. The machine had a bottom mounted boom cylinder, when we specified during negotiations that we wanted a top mounted boom cylinder.

As shown in the picture above. The hydraulic cylinder on the boom was on the bottom instead of the top. Let me explain why that matters.

Having the hydraulic cylinder on the bottom provides two significant disadvantages:

1. It is exposes the cylinder to damage due to operator error as the object you are moving with the hydraulic thumb can ding and damage the cylinder if you are not careful.听

2. It reduces the maximum digging depth of the excavator, as the cylinder gets in the way of the boom.

That being said, the most frustrating part was that quite simply, this wasn't what we had agreed to.

A lot of first time buyers aren't aware of difference the cylinder configuration really makes, and some manufacturers will take advantage of this.

Luckily, we did our research, and specifically requested at top mounted cylinder and agreed on a price with that in mind.听

The manufacturer attempted to play it off as a misunderstanding, and proceeded to tell us if we wanted the top mount, it would cost us a $1000 USD more.

The situation led into a two-month battle to get our deposit back, which we eventually won. However, the damage to our trust was done.

With much time wasted, we tried again with our second choice.

This time, the factory delivered exactly what they promised and the quality far exceeded our expectations.听

Solving the Problem

That鈥檚 when we had an idea. If we could address the after sales service by offering it ourselves, we could remove a lot of the risks around owning an imported excavator. That's what we've set out to do.

So far we鈥檝e expanded our offerings to include skid steer loaders, wheel loaders, rock crushers, drum rollers, and various attachments.

Currently, we carry parts in Canada for some of our most popular models, and we鈥檙e actively working on expanding the list. Our main goal is to open the first 多宝电子 service center in Canada to add even more value and ensure our after sales support leaves nothing to be desired.

]]>
Are you looking to buy a Mini Excavator? Making a decision can be difficult as there so many different models being offered for sale and price spread is huge. In this article we will go over main things to keep in mind when comparing mini excavator models听while making a purchase decision.

Mini Excavator comparison criteria听

  1. Mini Excavator Weight: It is common to find mini excavators ranging from 1.6 tons to 2 tons (machine weight) all being called a "2 ton mini excavators" as the reference is being made to the Operating Weight and not a Machine Weight. To compare apples to apples, ask the seller about the actual machine weight.听
  2. Mini Excavator Performance Characteristics: Mini excavators have four basic performance characteristic:听Max Digging Distance,听Max Digging Depth,听Max Digging Height,听 Max Dumping Height. Read our "Important mini excavator features to keep in mind" blog post to get more details. Please note that operation of the mini excavators at their maximum specifications is not efficient. It is better to buy a mini excavator that is capable of doing more than what your projects will require听
    Mini Excavator key characteristics
  3. Mini Excavator Engine: Cheaper priced mini excavators usually come equipped with gasoline engines. Gasoline engines are less expensive, but they can be less efficient, might require more maintenance and cost more in the long run. Usually it is preferable to buy a mini excavator with a diesel engine. Read "Find Out if the Kubota D902 is the Right Diesel Engine for Your Mini Excavator!" blog article to get more information about Kubota D902 diesel engine that 多宝电子's JT5200 2 Ton mini excavator is equipped with.听

  4. Mini Excavator Hydraulic Pump Type: Mini excavators can be equipped with hydraulic gear pump or hydraulic piston pump. A piston pump provides smoother operation but it is more expensive. Read our "Main Components of the Excavator Hydraulic System" blog post to learn more about the differences
Mini Excavator Gear and Piston Pump
  5. Final Drives / Travel Motors: Mini excavators can be equipped with single or double speed travel motors. Double speed will allow for faster travel, can provide more power and be more efficient. This will lead to long term fuel savings. When inspecting a mini excavator, it is easy to tell the type of the final drives by the number of hydraulic hoses connected to them. Single speed mini excavator final drive will have 2 houses and double speed final drive will have 3 hoses. A secondary benefit of the double speed final drives is that often they come with hose cover that lowers the risk of damaging final drive hoses听
Mini Excavator Double Speed vs Single Speed Travel Motor
  6. Boom Swing:听Some excavators are equipped with a swing boom that can also move the boom from side to side without rotating the excavator house. Cheaper models do not come equipped听with this option

  8. Boom Hydraulic Cylinder Location: Mini excavators, up to 2 tons, can have a boom cylinder located over the boom or under. The classic configuration has the boom hydraulic cylinder located under the boom and these models are usually cheaper. However major mini excavator brands like Kubota, CAT and Caterpillar prefer an over the boom cylinder mount for the following reasons:听听
    Mini Excavator Boom Cylinder
    1. Improved Mini Excavator Key Performance Characteristics:听Over the boom cylinder mounts will result in a greater maximum digging depth than under the boom cylinder models of the same size
    2. Additional boom cylinder protection: The boom itself is protecting the听 cylinder from being damaged by the material being excavated

  9. Hydraulic Cylinder Shields: At first, it might look like a minor detail, but cylinder shields add an extra layer of protection to your mini excavator that can prevent accidents and mini excavator down time. Also cylinder shields are mandatory for safe operation of some attachments such as hydraulic breaker hammers, to protect the arm cylinder from flying debris during operation of the mini excavator attachment. A cylinder shield can be added later, but they can cost several hundred dollars each for a 2 ton mini excavator.听Mini Excavator Cylinder Shield

/blogs/about-mini-excavators/main-components-of-the-excavator-hydraulic-system 2023-02-11T16:51:39-07:00 2023-04-17T14:14:20-06:00 Main Components of the Excavator Hydraulic System Arkadiy Matviyenko Hydraulic circuits are an essential part of excavators and other heavy equipment. A hydraulic circuit provides a reliable and efficient means of controlling power and movement in an excavator. In this article, we will explore the basics of a hydraulic circuit in excavators, including the components and their role.听

Components of an Excavator's Hydraulic Circuit

The hydraulic circuit of an excavator is composed of several components, all of which are necessary to ensure the excavator operates properly. The components of an excavator鈥檚 hydraulic circuit are the oil reservoir, the hydraulic pump, the excavator engine, the safety release valve, the main control valve, the filters, the hydraulic fluid, the hydraulic hoses, and the intercooler.

    • The oil reservoir: is the part of the hydraulic circuit that stores the hydraulic fluid that is used to power the excavator.听The hydraulic fluid is pumped from the reservoir to the other components of the hydraulic system, and is then returned back to the reservoir once it has been used. Secondary function of the oil reservoir includes cooling down of excavator hydraulic oil and reducing the amount of excavator hydraulic fluid heavy contaminants recirculation in the system a they get deposited at the bottom of the oil reservoir听听听听
    • The hydraulic pump: is a device that pumps the hydraulic fluid from the oil reservoir to the rest of the hydraulic system. Two most common types of the hydraulic pumps which are used in the mini excavators are gear pump and piston pump.听听Piston pumps are generally the better option. They are more efficient than gear pumps and can handle higher pressures and speeds so they are able to move more liquid than gear pumps. Usually excavators with piston pumps will have smoother operating hydraulics. However, piston pumps tend to be more expensive than gear pumps, so if cost is a factor, gear pumps may be the better choice. Ultimately, the choice between piston and gear pumps depends on the specific application, as each type of pump has its own advantages and disadvantages. If you are in the market for a 1 ton mini excavator, usually gear pump will be听sufficient, but if you are looking to buy a 2 ton mini excavator or larger, then a piston pump is recommended.
    • The excavator engine: is responsible for powering the hydraulic pump, and alternator to power the electrical system of the mini excavator. Most of the mini excavators get equipped with either gasoline or diesel engine.听When it comes to mini excavators, diesel engines are generally the better option due to their improved fuel economy and reliability. However, the more powerful and efficient off-highway diesels have become more complex and require more stringent emissions controls. Since diesel engines are more expensive than gasoline it is important to weigh the cost of the components against the benefits of the diesel engine before making a purchase decision. Read about pros and cons of Kubota D902 Diesel engine with which 多宝电子s JT5200 series mini excavators听get equipped听
    • The safety release valve: is a device that is used to release any excess pressure that is built up in the hydraulic system.听This pressure can be caused by a variety of factors, such as a faulty component or a buildup of debris in the system. The safety release valve helps to ensure that the pressure in the system is kept at a safe level and that any excess pressure is released before it can cause any damage. Since safety release valves have springs inside, eventually听the spring will fail and the valve will need to be replaced. It is important that the replacement pressure听valves听is rated for the appropriate pressure听that your mini excavator听requires. Tripping of the safety pressure听valve below required threshold听with decrease the power of your hydraulic system. Tripping of the safety pressure valve above the threshold will increase the risk of damaging or even having a catastrophic failure听of other components in your听 mini excavator's hydraulic听circuit听
    • The main control valve: is the part of the hydraulic circuit that allows the operator to control the flow of the hydraulic fluid, and distribute it between different parts of the mini excavator hydraulic circuit like linear (pistons) and rotary (motors) actuators. With the help of the main control valve, the mini excavator operator controls excavator's movement听
    • The filters: are used to ensure that the hydraulic fluid is clean and free of any debris or contaminants.听Without the filters, the hydraulic system could become clogged with debris or contaminated with contaminants, which could lead to the system malfunctioning or even breaking down. Contaminated hydraulic听fluid is the number one cause of failure of hydraulic system components. That is why hydraulic fluid filters are placed in multiple locations throughout mini excavator's hydraulic system.听听Generally, mini excavator听hydraulic system will have filters placed in the hydraulic fluid听reservoir, a breather filter on top of the hydraulic fluid reservoir, before and after the hydraulic pump as well as in the return lines and off-lines.听
    • The hydraulic fluid:is a type of non-compressible liquid that is used to transmit power within the hydraulic system. Also hydraulic fluid also helps to keep the excavator鈥檚 components and hoses lubricated, preventing corrosion and wear. Without the hydraulic fluid, the excavator would not be able to move
    • The hydraulic hoses:听Mini excavators often require hydraulic hoses that are durable and able to withstand high-pressure environments. The pressure rating for a hose should be above the system's normal operating pressure and account for temporary pressure surges. Rubber hydraulic hoses are usually made of nitrile rubber since it's compatible with most hydraulic fluids. Rubber hoses can either have textile reinforcement or a wire braid for reinforcement. Dedicated hydraulic lines for the pistons moving the arm and bucket sometimes are protectively channeled through the framework of the boom; this helps keep the hoses from being pinched, crushed, or otherwise damaged.
    • The oil cooler:听It can be argued that the second most common source of the hydraulic system failure in the is the excess heat. During the operation of the mini excavator, hydraulic fluid heats up due to energy being released in the form of heat. Excessive heat significantly reduces the life of mini excavator hoses and seals due to increased speed of chemical reaction of these components with the hydraulic fluid. Also excess heat impacts hydraulic fluid viscosity that leads to poor lubrication of the moving parts within mini excavator's hydraulic system. Last but not least, higher temperatures speed up hydraulic fluid aging by faster rate of oil oxidization and听production of听carbonaceous nitro-nitrates in the oil. Oil coolers help to keep oil temperatures under control and minimize the negative effect of the excess heat on the excavator's hydraulic system. Please note that oil cooler is not a "must have" for the hydraulic system to operate, that it why some of the entry level mini excavators might not be equipped with the oil cooler, but if the mini excavator is required to be operated continuously, oil cooler is highly recommended.听听听
    • The linier actuators: are the devices that enable linear motion in the hydraulic system. In the mini excavator's case linear actuators are hydraulic cylinders. Read more about hydraulic cylinders in Mini Excavator Terms article for more details听听
    • The rotary actuators: are the devices that enable rotary motion in the hydraulic system. Mini excavator's rotary actuators are the hydraulic motors used to rotate excavator's house听 and enable track movements听

    Mini Excavator Hydraulic System Conclusion

By reading this article you now have a general understanding about the mini excavator's hydraulic system components and what to look for when choosing a mini excavator. See 多宝电子's Mini Excavators for sale in Canada.听听

Below are common excavator terms that you should know:

    • Undercarriage: it includes tracks, tracks frame, final drive, and dozer blade. Often mini excavators under 2 tons could be equipped with the retractable / extendable tracks that allows to change the total width of the mini excavator. Retractable tracks are especially useful when trying to get through narrow spaces like backyard gates and even man doors
    Mini Excavator Undercarriage
    • Tracks: Excavator tracks are like tires for the car. Most common type of tracks for the mini excavator made from rubber and look like rubber belts. Inside rubber tracks there is听metal wire core to increase tracks longevity. Use of tracks result in lower ground pressure and better maneuverability听 when comparing to wheel option, but the trade of is travel speed. Wheeled excavators can generally travel faster than tracked听
    Mini Excavator Tracks

    • Grousers: are protrusions molded into rubber crawler-track that are designed to grip the ground. They are often used on excavators to improve traction while driving over rough surfaces. Grouser type influences the level of impact a mini excavator will have on the ground. Aggressive grousers will provide better traction, but they will also be more damaging to the ground and that is a point to consider when traversing over vegetation
    Mini Excavator Grousers

      • Sprocket:The sprocket is part of the excavator's track system听that connects the drive wheel to the track and enables tracks to move. The sprocket is usually composed of metal disc with teeth on the outside edge that interlock with the track's teeth.
      • Rollers:听They are a cylindrical-shaped component located in the center of the undercarriage and work to support the weight of the machine. Rollers are made up of several parts including an axle, a bearing, and a wheel. The axle holds the bearing in place, while the wheel helps move the excavator along. Rollers help reduce friction, keep tracks aligned and increase efficiency while the excavator is in motion.听
      • Idlers:听They are located at the front of the undercarriage听to support the track chain, provide traction and regulate tension. They help to keep the track听 in alignments and reduce vibration while the machine is in operation.
      • Rock Guard:听Rock Guard is a steel plate used to prevent dirt, debris, and other foreign objects from getting into the track of an excavator, thus protecting it and ensuring its longevity. It also provides additional support for operation in rocky or uneven terrain
      • Ground Clearance: Also known as ride height, ground clearance is the space between the lowest part of the excavator and the surface below it. It is important for an excavator to have enough ground clearance so that it can travel on rough terrain without damaging the undercarriage.
      • Ground Pressure: An excavator ground pressure is a measure of the amount of force an excavator can exert on the ground. An excavator's ground pressure will increase or decrease based on the weight of the excavator and load being hauled. Increasing the size of the contact area (footprint) on the ground in relation to weight decreases unit ground pressure. The lower the pressure, the easier it is to move through soft terrain like marshes or swamps. Low ground pressure equipment spreads the weight of an excavator over a larger surface, enabling it to work through soft ground that most standard machines cannot handle. This enables the excavator to perform heavy tasks in wetlands, swamps and other soft areas that would be impossible for a wheeled excavator to do. This also saves on the cost of reclaiming the area after the construction project is complete by reducing the damage caused to the ground.听
      • Track Frame: An excavator track frame is an assembly of welded steel plates used to support the undercarriage of a crawler machine. It is typically comprised of X-frame or H-frame, both of which are designed to provide the best balance between lightness and torsional rigidity. Typical parts of the track frame include a pair of bottom rollers, top roller, front idler and sprocket. Depending on the type of undercarriage, a track adjuster may also be located behind the front idler to maintain correct track tension.

      Mini Excavator Track Frame
      • Final Drive: The excavator final drive performs the same function as the transmission in a car. It is responsible for transferring the engine's power to the tracks or wheels of the excavator. It is made up of two or more planetary gears that are connected in series, allowing the power to be split in two directions. This gives the excavator the ability to move forward, backward, and rotate. The final drive also has a hydraulic motor that controls the excavator鈥檚 speed and power. It is responsible for translating the engine鈥檚 power into torque, which is then used to move the tracks or wheels. Without the final drive, an excavator would not be able to move.
      • Excavator track drives: are an integral part of an excavator's powertrain, providing the majority of the power to move the excavator. They are typically composed of a drive motor, drive sprocket, and track chains, which are connected to the track shoes. The drive motor powers the sprocket, which drives the track chains to move the track shoes. This gives the excavator the capability to move in any direction and makes it ideal for digging, grading, and other earthmoving tasks.
      Excavator Final Drive
      • Dozer Blade or Backfill Blade: it is a blade located in the front of the excavator between the tracks or wheels. This blade has the ability to go up and down and can be used for pushing excess material, providing additional support while digging and to help lift mini excavator鈥檚 undercarriage to retract or extend tracks. Mini excavators with retractable tracks will be equipped with dozer bladed that have adjustable width

      • Cab: An excavator cab is the protective housing over the operator's seat. It is designed to shield the operator from sun, wind, noise, dust, and other elements. It also can provide operator comfort features like air conditioning and heater. It typically has windows on all sides that allow the operator to have a full view of the work area, and some come with a boom-mounted camera to give the operator a full view of the excavation. The cab is an integral part of the excavator, providing the operator with a safe and comfortable working environment.
      Excavator Cab
      • Main Control Valve: It regulates the hydraulic pressure and flow going to the hydraulic actuators which control the movement of the excavator鈥檚 arm and bucket. The main control valve is normally located in the cab of the excavator, and consists of a series of levers and valves that allow the operator to control the speed, pressure, and direction of the excavator鈥檚 movements. The main control valve typically consists of two main parts: the control valve and the pressure reducing valve. The control valve is responsible for regulating the pressure going to the actuators, while the pressure reducing valve ensures that the pressure going to the actuators is within the manufacturer鈥檚 recommended limits.
      • ROPS:Mini excavator Rollover Protection System (ROPS) is a device designed to protect the operator of a mini excavator from the risk of death or serious injury in the event of a rollover incident. It is composed of a metal frame that is mounted to the upper part of the cab, which acts as a barrier between the operator and potential impact points. Usually frame is connected to the base of the cab by two lateral bars and two vertical bars. The ROPS is designed to keep the cab upright if a rollover does occur, thus providing the operator with a safe space in which to take shelter. Additionally, the ROPS includes safety features such as seatbelts, fire suppression systems, and alarms. These features are essential for the safety of the operator and the excavator in the event of a rollover incident.
      Excavator ROPS

      • Boom:听 The term boom refers to the section of an excavator that extends outward from the cab. This section is used to hold the arm, bucket and attachments. Some excavators are equipped with swing boom that can also move from side to side in addition to up and down
      Excavator Boom
      • Dipper Arm or Stick:听The dipper arm is the long, movable arm on the excavator that has a bucket or other attachment mounted at the end. It is used to pick up and move materials like dirt, rocks, and gravel. The arm can also use various attachments to cut and shape material, break up chunks of rock, and drill deep into the ground. It is an incredibly versatile piece of equipment that allows for a wide range of construction tasks.
      Excavator Arm
      • Bucket:听An excavator bucket, is the part of an excavator that holds the material during excavation. It is connected to the excavator's boom and arm and is used as the digging tool. The bucket is designed to dig, lift, and carry materials such as soil, sand, gravel, rocks, and debris. It is usually composed of a steel flat blade with edges that are curved or rounded to make it easier to dig into the ground. The curved edges also make it easier to lift the material out of the hole. The bucket has a wide range of sizes depending on the type of excavation and the material that needs to be moved. It can also be attached to additional tools.
      Excavator Bucket
      • Ram / Hydraulic Cylinder:An excavator hydraulic ram is an essential component of any excavator, and is responsible for providing the power needed to operate the machine. The hydraulic ram is connected to the excavator's hydraulic pump, and the pressure created by the pump is used to move a piston inside the ram. This piston is connected to a rod, which is in turn connected to the boom, bucket, and other attachments. The movement of the piston causes the boom and other attachments to move as desired. The hydraulic ram is a key component of an excavator as it provides the necessary power to make the machine operate.听Most mini excavators will have at least four hydraulic rams which are used to move the boom, arm, attachment and dozer blade.
      • Hydraulic Cylinder Shield:听An excavator hydraulic cylinder shield is a device used to protect hydraulic cylinders from being damaged by foreign objects. It is typically composed of a metal or plastic shield, which is connected to the hydraulic cylinder and provides a continuous protective layer. It is designed to keep the hydraulic system safe from debris and other materials that could potentially cause damage. The shield also helps to reduce the chance of hydraulic fluid leakage and keeps the hydraulic system clean and functioning optimally.
      • Counterweight:听An excavator counterweight is a heavy object that is attached to the back of the excavator. Its purpose is to balance the excavator while it is in use. The counterweight adds extra weight to the back end of the machine, allowing the operator to move more comfortably and with more control while digging. It is typically made of cast iron or steel.
      • Swamp Pad:听Excavator swamp pads are mats made of durable hardwood timbers or metal that are used to provide stability and safety for heavy machinery and workers when working in听soft soil听environments
      • Operating weight:听An excavator operating weight is the total weight of the excavator, including all of its components, such as the cab, engine, tracks, and attachments. This weight is important because it determines the stability of the machine, which plays a significant role in its safety, performance, and efficiency. The excavator's operating weight is also a key factor in deciding which types of jobs it is suitable for and the types of terrains it can traverse.
      • Maximum bucket force:This is the amount of force that the excavator can apply to a material such as dirt or soil. The maximum bucket force is determined by the size and power of the excavator and is usually expressed in units of kilonewtons or pounds. It is an important factor to consider as it directly impacts听the types of projects that the excavator can take on and the how fast it can be completed听
      • Maximum digging depth: Just like the term states, it means how deep an excavator can dig. It听depends on various factors, including the size of the bucket, the length of the arm, and the power of the engine. Keep in mind that digging at the maximum depth of the excavator might not be the most efficient听process听
      • Maximum digging听height:The maximum digging height of an excavator is the highest point it is capable of reaching when digging. This height is determined by the length of its boom and its reach, as well as how much weight the excavator can handle. Similarly听to the mini exactor's听听maximum digging depth, it is not the most efficient process to dig at such height. It is recommended to purchase mini excavators with greater maximum values than actually required for your project.
      • Maximum dumping听height: The听maximum dumping height of an excavator is the highest point to which the excavator鈥檚 bucket or dipper can be raised while carrying a load. Please note that dumping at maximum height is not the most efficient听use of the excavator听
      • Reach:听A reach of the mini excavator refers to the boom reach of the excavator, which is the distance from the base of the machine to the end of the boom arm. It determines how far away the excavator can dig while remaining stationary. This can be beneficial in certain applications, such as when excavating in tight spaces

          ]]>
Purchasing a mini excavator is an investment that can propel your business forward. However, like any machine, it requires proper care to ensure longevity and optimal performance. To get the highest return on your investment, follow these daily maintenance requirements and upkeep tips for your mini excavator:

          Excavator Fluid Checks

Regularly checking fluids is a simple yet crucial task that can prevent significant damage, downtime, and costly repairs. The main fluids to check are:

          • Engine Oil Level
          • Hydraulic Fluid Level
          • Coolant Level
          • Fuel Level: It is recommended to keep the fuel tank full and fill it up after each use to prevent air from entering the fuel system. If air has entered the fuel system, it should be purged according to the manufacturer鈥檚 recommendations. Additionally, ensure the "air breather" on the tank cap is clean of debris and mud to prevent under-pressurization.
          • Water and Fuel Separator Check: Some excavators have a fuel/water separator with a red ring in a clear container that floats in the water. Once the red ring reaches the mark, the water should be drained, and the separator cleaned. Water in your fuel can significantly reduce engine life.

          Excavator听Lubrication Points

To avoid premature wear, ensure that all lubrication points are properly lubricated. Key lubrication points include:
          • Boom bottom linkage
          • Arm bottom linkage
          • Boom cylinder boss
          • Arm cylinder boss
          • Bucket cylinder boss
          • Bucket link pin
          • Arm cylinder pin
          • Boom swing fulcrum
          • Swing cylinder boss
          • Dozer cylinder boss
          • Dozer linkage boss
Special attention should be given to lubrication when operating the mini excavator in wet conditions.

          Excavator Track Adjustment

Track tension should be checked daily if the excavator is frequently in heavy use. Too loose a track can result in poor maneuvering and de-tracking, while too tight a track can cause premature wear and breakage. Both scenarios lead to downtime and costly repairs.

          Examine the Excavator Undercarriage

While checking track tightness, also examine the undercarriage for damage and dirt buildup. Regularly cleaning the undercarriage helps prevent premature wear.
          Inspect the Excavator Engine Compartment
Look for leaks and signs of damage in:
          • Hydraulic Tank, Hoses, and Plugs: Check for tightness in hose clamps.
          • Radiator and Oil Cooler: Check for leaks and clogs in radiator fins and ribs. Use compressed air to remove any blockages.
          • Electrical Circuit: Look for disconnections, shorts, or loose terminals.
          • Belts: Inspect for signs of wear or rubbing marks.

          Inspect Attachments

Before using any excavator attachments, ensure they are in good working condition. Make sure attachments are greased (if applicable) and check for leaks in hydraulic attachments.

          Conclusion

To increase the likelihood of these checks being conducted and to ensure your mini excavator lasts longer, choose an excavator with easy access to the engine compartment and grease points on one side of the boom.

Maintaining your mini excavator is straightforward but requires attention and focus. Proper care will ensure your mini excavator performs well for a long time.

The mini excavator is one of those great tools for your business that can help save a significant amount of time and money. Which brings the question, what kind of mini excavator features should you keep in mind when choosing the right digger for you? Let鈥檚 find out!

          Mini Excavator Operating Weight

Operating weight refers to the total weight of the excavator while working. This includes the average weight of the operator and all the liquids like: fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid. In the large excavator word, couple hundred kilograms difference of the operating weight does no make a big difference, but when it comes to the mini excavators it is important to make a distinguish. It is common to find offers of 鈥2 ton mini excavators for sale鈥 that have actual machine weight of 1.7 tons. In general, the heavier the excavator the greater performance capabilities it will have. 1.7 ton vs 2 ton machine weight mini excavators some times could have up to 15% lower performance capabilities.

To make sure that you are comparing apples to apples, it is advisable to make sure that you are comparing mini excavators of the same weight.

          Mini Excavator Basic Performance Capabilities

Four main performance capabilities of an excavator to consider are:

          • Max Digging Distance: see 鈥淒鈥 below. It shows the maximum distance the excavator can reach at the ground level. Please pay attention that the distance is measured from the center of the excavator rotation axis.
          • Max Digging Depth: see 鈥淐鈥 below. It shows the maximum depth the excavator can reach with its bucket measured from the bottom of the tracks (ground level). Please pay attention to the trajectory of the bucket movement, digging a trench at the maximum depth is possible, but will be challenging and time consuming. It is best to pick an excavator where 80% of the maximum digging depth will satisfy the maximum digging depth of your project
          • Max Digging Height: see 鈥淎鈥 below. It shows the maximum height the excavator can reach with the bucket teeth measured form the bottom of the tracks. It is important to understand that digging height is different from the dumping height.
          • Max Dumping Height: see 鈥淏鈥 below: It shows the maximum height from which the material can be unloaded. If the material needs to be dumped into a vehicle with greater side height then the maximum dumping heigh, then it would not be possible to load that vehicle if the vehicle and the excavator are on the same ground level.

          听听2 ton mini excavator diagram

When looking at the maximum values it is important to keep in mind that just because it is possible, it does not mean that it will be efficient. It is advisable to avoid operating excavators at its maximum capabilities. Best to choose a machine that is capable of doing at least 20% to 30% more than your project requires.

          • Bucket size: Excavator bucket is most common excavator attachment that is used for digging. There are different types and sizes of the buckets available. Common types of the buckets are:

          • Digging Bucket: Most excavators come standard with digging bucket. It has sharp teeth which could be replaced if broken. Most common use is the top soil excavation
          • Rock Bucket: It is like the Digging Bucket, but it is heavier duty and has reinforced design. It requires to be able to break through rock. Often the teeth on the rock bucket are V-shaped. Main use is to dig through rocky soil
          • Hard-Pan Buckets: Similar to the Rock Bucket, but the design also has teeth at the back of the bucket that can be used to loosen up soil
          • V-Bucket: Digging end of the V-bucket is narrower than the top. This design enables digging of the shallow V-shaped tranches for pipes and cable that can be installed at shallow depth.
          • Riddle Bucket: Constructed from the steel plates with gaps between each other to allow smaller particles to pass through. It is used as a sifter to separate larger part like rocks from the soil
          • Grading Bucket: They do not have teeth and usually wider in size. Mainly used for working with soft soil while back filling, sloping, and leveling. Sometimes grading buckets can be equipped with a till option that allow for the bucket to not only perform the wrist up/down motion, but also tilt from side to side. This additional motion allows for more efficient sloping and leveling
When it comes to the size of the bucket two things to keep in mind is the volume and width. Volume is usually measured in cubic yards or cubic meters and width is measured in inches or millimeters. There is a correlation between width and volume, wide buckets usually have greater volume but due to design differences not all buckets of the same width will have the same volume.
Generally, it makes sense to use the largest bucket size rated for the size of your excavator as it will allow for more material to be moved with a single pass and thus speed up job completion. Exceptions are project specific limitations like maximum allowed width of the trench where some buckets might be too big. When working with hard soil or rock in might be necessary to decrease the bucket size as smaller buckets are capable of producing greater pressures. That is the reason why digging buckets are narrower than the grading buckets
Refer to the bucket size table below. Please note that the table is only for guidance purposes. Always check with your excavator manufacturer:

          Mini Excavator Wheels or Tracks?

Excavators can have either wheels or tracks. Each have their own advantages depending on the task at hand. If you have a need to drive the excavator around a large job site, then the wheeled option might be the best fit for you. Wheeled excavators can reach travel speeds of up to 35 km/h while most of the tracked counterparts max travel speed cannot exceed 10 km/h. However due to the higher center of gravity most of the wheeled versions require the use of stabilizer feet which could be an inconvenience.

Majority of mini excavators come equipped with tracked undercarriage as it allows for higher maneuverability, less damage to the ground due to exerted lower ground pressure and no need for using stabilizer feet. For small work sites and confined spaces, tracked mini excavator is a better fit in most of the cases.

Mini Excavator Telematic and Antitheft Systems

North America has high level of construction equipment thefts because construction equipment can be easier to steel and can cost more than average cars. Besides the readily available antitheft measures like extra lock, excavators can be equipped with the following features to deter theft even further:

          • Battery disconnects: A device with a key that cutoffs battery power to the machine which prevents the machine form being started. This is a deterrent but will not prevent theft as there are ways to wire around it or possibly use an external battery
          • Fuel line shutoff valves: Work together with the fuel pump and they are used to prevent flow of fuel to stop engine from running in the event of the theft
          • Engine Kill Switch: It allows for the engine to be shut off remotely in the event of the theft

Above devices are a good deterrent that can be made even more powerful with the help of the telematics system that provided live location tracking of the vehicle, setting up of the geo fences to send out alerts if the vehicle leaves certain area. If the theft in progress is discovered, with the help of the telematic system excavator鈥檚 electrical system and the engine can be shut off from the smart phone. 听

          Mini Excavator Accessories

Accessories might be an afterthought for some, but thanks to the accessories mini excavator can be like a Swiss army knife. Some of the common excavator accessories are augers, forklifts, rippers, grapplers, teeth buckets, breakers, log grapples, rakes, thumb buckets, rippers and so on. There are a plethora of different mini excavator accessories, just make sure that the accessory is rated for your size of the excavator, and you know accessory鈥檚 limits. 听听

1 Ton Mini Excavator 多宝电子 Canada

Main advantage of mini excavators are:

          • Compact size relative to the bigger excavators and backhoes: Most excavators with weight under 2 tons could be equipped with retractable undercarriage that allows them to pass through regular backyard gates and work in tight spaces.
          • Low Noise: Mini Excavators make less noise especially when traversing on cement and other hard surfaces. This makes them a great choice for the urban environment
          • Fuel efficiency: Smaller size of the machine opens the door for smaller engines that consume less fuel while still getting the job done. In addition mini excavators can be delivered to the job site with a smaller vehicle on a smaller trailer. Smaller excavator engine, smaller truck and smaller trailer = smaller fuel bill.
          • Lower Maintenance costs: Smaller engines and lower volume hydraulic systems generally incur lower maintenance costs than full size excavators. There are less parts to replace, and parts are more affordable
          • Lower purchase cost: Mini excavator generally cost less than the larger machines and with the current high cost of labor in Canada, they pay for themselves in a shorter period on time
          • Full range of attachments: There is a full range of excavator attachments available for the mini excavators. They include augers, breaker hammers, hydraulic thumbs, tilting buckets, grapples, log splitters, rakes and so on
          • Simple to operate: It is easier to operate a mini excavator and most of the people can learn how to use them within the matter of hours

Mini excavator is like a Swiss knife, it is compact, can perform multiple functions and can be a life saver in certain situations. However Swiss knife is not the best tool if you are looking to chop down a tree. That is why it is advised to use mini excavators for small to medium jobs where their size advantage will pay off.
